Sports betting apps are now legal in NC
Betting will begin next year. | Photo by @NC_Governor
Last month, Gov. Roy Cooper signed House Bill 347 — aka the Sports Wagering Bill — into law, making sports betting apps legal throughout North Carolina. This bill will allow online and mobile game day betting on the outcomes of pro, college, electronic, and amateur sports, as well as pari-mutuel betting on horse racing.
But not so fast — NC bettors must wait until January 2024 at the earliest to place wagers online. The bill’s regulations and licensing structures must be approved by the NC State Lottery Commission by January 8, 2024, and the commission also has until June 14, 2024 to allow sportsbook operators to start their business.
Operators will pay an 18% tax on revenue to the state, with a portion of the money being used by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services for problem gambling treatment. Additional funds will support youth sports programs.
Winston-Salem has been my home for the past decade and I still discover new and wonderful things almost daily. I’m passionate about the special people and places in this corner of the world — I can’t wait to share them with you. Drop me a line to say hello!
