A gift toward the future

Salem College receives $5 million gift from anonymous alumna

$5 million. That’s how much Salem College has received in what leaders are calling a “transformative” gift. It’s the second $5 million dollar donation the school has received in less than three years and it came from one of Salem’s own — an alumna who asked to remain anonymous.

According to the president of Salem Academy and College, the money will be used to fund scholarships, as well as new academic and personnel initiatives. It will all support the school’s mission of being the only liberal arts college in the US focused on health leadership.

That initiative has been underway since early 2021. The college revised existing programs and added eight new academic majors, minors and Masters programs to support the goal. There are currently more than 75 courses at Salem with a direct focus on health.

Salem Academy and College has operated for 252 years, making it the oldest educational institution for girls and women in the country. Leaders say the health leadership focus will ensure all students graduate with an understanding of how to make the world a healthier place and will elevate women’s role in solving health challenges.

Experience history during a stay at Graylyn

Graylyn Estate and Conference Center earns rank in “Best Boutique Hotels” list

When USA TODAY asked readers which boutique hotels across the US offered the best stays, the Graylyn Estate and Conference Center was one of their top choices. The historic property on Reynolda Road earned the number five slot on its readers’ choice list — but do you know the history behind it?

Bowman and Nathalie Gray built the estate in the late 1920s. Bowman was a former president and chairman of RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company. When he and his wife moved into the estate in 1932, the home was the second largest in NC, behind only the Biltmore Estate in Asheville.

In 1946, Nathalie and her sons donated the estate to the Bowman Gray School of Medicine. It served as an academic hospital until 1972, when younger son Gordon bought the property and donated it to Wake Forest University.

Graylyn International Conference Center opened in 1984 and continues to welcome guests today.

From the editor
Co-editor Kellina and I had the opportunity to eat lunch together at The Barcelona Burger and Beer Garden this week. While the burger was fantastic, my favorite part might have been the pineapple vinaigrette salad dressing. If you’re looking for a new lunch spot downtown, check it out — you can enjoy their full menu with views of Bailey Park.
