¡Prepárate para la fiesta! Get ready to party! The Triad’s largest one-day Hispanic street festival will take place Saturday, Sept. 9 in downtown Winston-Salem. The Hispanic League celebrates its 31st annual FIESTA at Truist Stadium. Over 20,000 people have taken part in the festival in years past, creating a tradition of celebrating cultural diversity.
Festival-goers can enjoy live music, diverse arts and crafts + authentic food from 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. The event is free and open to public.
The Hispanic League is a Winston-Salem nonprofit organization that facilitates multiple initiatives to support its community through education. Some of its programs include Middle School Achievers, Scholarship Program, and the Parent Enrichment program to empower Hispanic/Latino parents to support their children’s education. The Hispanic League also awards scholarships to students to help them continue their education.
This event makes the start of a Month-long Hispanic Heritage celebration.
How long is the national celebration?
National Hispanic Heritage Month goes from Sept. 15-Oct. 15. The month celebrates the contributions Hispanic ancestors from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America made to the United States.
Why is September significant?
September 15 was chosen as the kickoff because of the Independence Day celebrations in five Central America countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Those five nations declared their independence from Spain on September 15, 1821.
How did it go from a one week observance to a month?
Hispanic Heritage was a weeklong celebration until 1989 when President George W. Bush, who had been a sponsor, became the first president to declare National Hispanic Heritage Month in honor of Hispanic Americans.

Prepare for Hurricane Idalia and Hurricane Franklin’s arrival
Flash flood risk over central pacific map | National Hurricane Center via website
On Monday, Aug. 28, Gov. Roy Cooper declared a State of Emergency for NC ahead of Hurricane Idalia and Hurricane Franklin’s impacts.
Hazardous conditions and four to six inches of heavy rain are expected to hit NC Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning with the risk of flooding.
Possible rainfall and high winds may affect Winston-Salem residents as Hurricane Idalia continues to form over the East Coast today, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The area is in the yellow zone for flash flooding through Thursday morning, meaning there’s a slight risk you could encounter high waters.
“It is important for North Carolinians to gather emergency kits and prepare for the storm before it’s too late,” Cooper said in a press release.

I am excited to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month at FIESTA this year. I love celebrating different cultures and experiencing their food, music, arts and, most importantly — the people. Maybe I’ll get to practice my Spanish while I’m there.
