“Buy good coffee” — that’s what the owners of BYGood Coffee want for customers in Winston-Salem. City Editor Kellina learned about the process from start to finish at the shop located on Brookstown Avenue.

Owners Abbey and Darrell Garner founded the coffee shop in 2016 in the suburbs of Long Island, NY. Instead of Buy Good Coffee, they omitted the “U” — adding it to their slogan “Only U missing” — and the name “BYGood Coffee” was born.

Abbey and Darrell moved to Winston-Salem in 2020 and found a new community in the midst of the pandemic.

“People were so welcoming here,” Abbey said. “They [the community] welcomed us with open arms.”

The owners import specialty coffee beans from various regions around the world, including Ethiopia, Brazil, and Costa Rica. Darrell handles the roasting process at least five times a day. He says his favorite part is selecting the best quality beans to bring to the Twin City and seeing customers take delight in their creations.

“From cup to cup is what we get excited about, as far as watching our customers see the whole process of [roasting] and them enjoying coffee,” Darrell said.

You can see the process in action yourself during store hours, which takes ~20 minutes.

The shop also serves Abbey’s homemade teas. City Editor Kellina recommends the Star Shine tea, named after Abbey’s mother. Get your hands on it when you can, because it sells out fast.

“Our core principle is treat people right, serve the best coffee and loose leaf teas, as a place where people come — a home away from home,” Darrell said.

You can buy good coffee at the store seven days a week except on holidays. As part of Drink Up Week, the shop is offering 15% off one standard menu-sized handcrafted beverage of choice through Wednesday, July 31.
