It’s a bird, it’s a plane... soon it will be drone deliveries in the sky over Winston-Salem. Drone Express has unveiled its delivery service will launch late summer in the Twin City.

The startup that’s based in Dayton, OH expanded to Winston-Salem after becoming a member of AeroX earlier this year. The nonprofit based on West 4th Street is a consortium of innovators, businesses, and government entities focused on developing and commercializing aerial technology.

The company will first offer family friendly bundle boxes. They will include a variety of meals, snacks, sweets, kids activities, and pet products, ranging from $13 to $20. Drone Express has nationwide partnerships with The Kroger Company, Papa John’s International, and other retailers for goods.

You’ll place an order through the Drone Express app. A short time later, an unmanned drone will drop the box at your doorstep.

Drone Express will be one of a few companies certified to offer unmanned beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) deliveries in the US.

Drone Express has been hard at work finalizing logistics and operating details. It’s secured space in the SouthEast Plaza shopping center on Waughtown Street, where it plans to base operations. The company says it wants to cater to individuals and families of all demographics + promote a healthy lifestyle with its services.

“Our team is committed to providing innovative, efficient, and eco-friendly delivery that will transform how residents shop and live,” said Beth Flippo, CEO of Drone Express. “We look forward to enhancing everyday life and joining this wonderful community.”

We’ll keep you posted when the boxes take flight. In the meantime, Drone Express is still finalizing its Part 135 certification with the Federal Aviation Administration. Once that’s complete, it plans to expand commercial delivery services.

The story behind UNC School of the Arts’ unique mascot

How could we forget that UNC School of the Arts (UNCSA) has top-ranked filmmaking and drama schools? Arts education isn’t the only thing earning the school attention — its mascot is also a pretty big dill.

The Fighting Pickles have been around since the 1970s, when UNCSA held a contest to name its touch football team. Francis Perry says he and two housemates submitted “The Pickles” as a joke in honor of an oboe student who was on a quest for the perfect pickle. Students relished the name and have embraced the moniker ever since.

Another contest in 2010 yielded an updated design of the mascot. The Fighting Pickles ranked No. 1 on Cheetos’ Top 25 Cheesiest Mascots list in 2012. It earned the title of “most unconventional college mascot” in an online competition in 2018.

Today, you can sport your pickle pride with merchandise and by supporting UNCSA productions. Learn more about what makes the university special.
