It’s been a “brat summer” whether you knew it or not, so we’re here to explain what it means and how to get in on the fun before flannels and pumpkin spice lattes take over in a few months.

British singer Charli XCX’s released her album “brat” on June 7, which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard charts. Its 15 tracks examine existential topics like womanhood, family, and insecurity — all with an electric veneer of dance pop partying. In essence, to be a “brat” is to be yourself, flaws and all, while still having fun.

Now that you’re caught up on the lingo, here are three spots to live out your very own “brat summer” in the city.

Winston-Salem Theatre Alliance | Friday, Aug. 16-Sunday Aug. 25 | $19-$21 | Get inspired by the life of Lady Diana Spencer, who married Prince Charles and instantly became a cultural phenomenon. The new musical depicts how Princess Diana stood up for her family, her country, and herself — above all, how she created a legacy.

Muddy Creek Cafe & Listening Room | Price varies | Enter your bluegrass and soulful melodies era in Old Salem. The rustic and family-friendly cafe hosts folk and traditional musicians + serves hot sandwiches, salads, rotating beers, and wine.

Perry Lower Orchards | Reenact the viral “Apple” TikTok dance while you’re picking actual fruit at this sixth generation family-owned orchard located about an hour outside of downtown Winston-Salem. The Honeycrisp and Gala apples are already in harvest. Join its Apple U-Pick opening weekend during Labor Day weekend starting Saturday, Aug. 31.
