Rose and Thistle
This spot got longtime locals talking. Readers like Beverly H. recalled the casual and comfortable atmosphere, with Stephanie L. saying it was “the kind of place you went with a gang of friends.” Several readers like Steve G. said they miss the pizza.
The Lighthouse Grill
The restaurant in West End operated for more than 65 years before closing in 2020. Readers like Don A. remember the friendly atmosphere as much as the food. Annie J. said the burgers had great chili and slaw, and Katherine W. wishes they were still serving their vegetable plate, with “lima beans, mac and cheese, and cucumber salad.”

One Salem Tower on Brookstown Avenue is under new ownership. An affiliate of Kaplan Early Learning Co. purchased the 55,000-sqft building and adjacent 0.49-acre lot for $6.17 million as an investment property. (Winston-Salem Journal)

Lennar Corp. plans to build 65 townhomes on 10.7 acres in the Hillcrest subdivision off Stratford Road. The company paid Trilogy Investment Co. $4.6 million for the property — no word yet on when construction could begin. (Triad Business Journal)

Wise Man Brewing is now serving coffee. The taproom’s new coffee bar is open daily at 8 a.m. It closes at 3 p.m. weekdays and 1 p.m. on weekends.

Wake Forest men’s soccer team brought home their first ACC Tournament title since 2017. They tied 1-1 against Clemson in regulation and extra time during the finals yesterday in Cary. The Deacs won after eight rounds of penalty kicks. (WFMY News 2)

Teacher assistants in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools are getting a raise. The Board of Education voted unanimously to use $500,000 from the county to increase pay. They also approved using a state mental health grant to award bonuses to social workers and counselors. (WFDD)

Two Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools are in the top 50 of US News & World Report’s 2025 rankings of the best NC elementary and middle schools. Southwest Elementary School in Clemmons was ranked No. 34 statewide and The Downtown School was ranked No. 49 for its middle school.

You might notice some changes the next time you visit Bowman Gray Stadium. NASCAR and the City of Winston-Salem are making upgrades to the lighting system + installing a new track barrier and catch fences to prepare for the inaugural CLASH season kickoff Feb. 1-2. (WXII 12 News)

A center to provide services like child care, counseling, case management, and job training to underserved mothers will be built on ~45 acres in Kernersville. The nonprofit Room at the Inn will run the future Promise Center off Brookford Road — a groundbreaking is expected in 2025. (FOX8 WGHP)

The Winston-Salem Police Department is finalizing plans to expand its use of drones. The unmanned devices can respond to emergency scenes before officers arrive. The drones are currently restricted to flying a two-mile radius from the rooftop of Artist Village at UNC School of the Arts. (Triad City Beat)
