Wake Forest University’s prestigious Face to Face Speaker Forum is ending its 2024-25 season on a high note.

Music icon John Legend, one of only fifteen people to earn an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony), is coming to the LJVM Coliseum on Tuesday, April 8, for an engaging conversation with journalist Segun Oduolowu.

Psst… All three other Face to Face events sold out this season, including this month’s forum with author and PBS commentator David Brook — so we recommend securing your seats asap.

News Notes

History

Celebrate Black History Month with the Lunch & Learn Series throughout February. The first session is on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 12 p.m. and features Dr. Arnita “Nailah” Porter, who will present on Black women artists of the Civil Rights Movement. Tickets are $29.

Cause

The Equitable Homeownership Project is underway. The project seeks to assist in home-buying for households with less than 80% annual median income. As a part of the project, four 3-BR 2.5-BA homes will be built and priced at $194,500. (The Chronicle)

Edu

Proposal denied. Earlier this year, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools proposed a change that wouldn’t automatically reject prospective employees for testing positive for THC. The WS/FCS Board of Education rejected that change — meaning all prospective hires must pass a drug test. (Winston-Salem Journal)

Volunteer

Looking for a way to make a difference? The 10th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Helping Hands Day is on Friday, Feb. 7 at 10 a.m. Sign up to volunteer at non-profits like the Boys & Girls Club + Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful.

Development

$2.7 million. That’s how much Wake Forest University has paid to acquire the property for its Nano and Quantum Technologies Laboratory. The facility, previously located at 501 Deacon Blvd., is moving to make room for a mixed-use development. (Winston-Salem Journal)

Biz

A Winston-Salem commercial real estate developer is expanding in Lexington. Davidson Craven is planning a ~300-acre industrial center along I-85. Construction has begun on the first ~272,000-sqft building and completion is slated for the end of the year. (Triad Business Journal)

Mansion Monday

We love a house with a view. This 6.7-acre property of land overlooking Quarry Park is just begging for a mansion with giant windows. Take a look and tell us you disagree.

The Wrap

Confession time. I only got an eight out of 10 on the quiz... and I’m the one who made it. What happened?

I’ll be honest — the last two questions are a little tough. Maybe you’ll do better than me.
