Hey, Winston-Salem. You know WStoday as the free newsletter in your inbox each morning, packed with the most uplifting and impactful local news. Our team highlights the best of our city — from events and new businesses to exciting developments and the amazing people who call Twin City home.

We have incredible advertising partners that support our mission to bring only the most positive local news and events to Winston-Salem, but sustaining a modern media company requires much more. That’s why we’ve created this reader-driven campaign, with a goal to raise $2,500 over the next 10 days. If you’ve enjoyed being subscribed to WStoday, found a life-changing concert in our Events section, used our City Guides to plan perfect days with family, or impressed your dinner guests with all the details of that new development you read about — we couldn’t be more honored to be part of your life. And we’re calling on you now to help support our mission.

A few reminders about who we are:

We curate local news. No matter which news outlet, community organization, small business, or reader breaks the story — the most positive local news and events worth your attention are curated into our daily newsletter. Our dedicated City Editors live, work, and play in Winston-Salem, carrying out our mission to highlight the incredible small businesses, non-profits, and city programs you want to hear about.

We’re committed to maintaining our readers’ trust. Fun fact: Our parent company 6AM City has turned down more than a million dollars in political ads since we started — we’re that serious about our brand promise. We think reading about what’s going on in your city should be a positive experience, not something that rockets your blood pressure before you’ve even started your day.

The truth is, we love what we do. Sharing the most positive local news and events with our readers fuels us every day. If you’ve felt the love for our product too, help us today with a one-time contribution that supports local storytelling.

We all need a staycation or a trip to a different city from time to time. Whether you’re a Winstonian feeling a little cooped up or a visitor looking for a special Twin City experience, picking the perfect home away from home is crucial.

We went looking for unique lodgings around town that showcase that artistic and innovative spirit. So choose your ideal digs, pack your bags, and get ready for a memorable getaway.

Hideaways with history

Zevely Inn, 803 S. Main St.
This bed and breakfast is located in Old Salem and has hosted travelers since the mid-1800s. Some of the 12 rooms have fireplaces and all are adorned with simple but stately decor.

Summit Street Inns, 434 Summit St.
What were once two family homes are now charming respites in historic West End. The Ludlow and Sheppard houses have been renovated with modern amenities (think complimentary Wi-Fi and luxurious bathrooms) and unique decor.

Artistic sanctuaries

West Salem Art Hotel, 912 Albert St.
Each room in this hotel offers an experience as unique as the decor. Short-term rentals are available for the Rose Room, the ART/partment, the Parisian Suite, or the VHS Suite. Each room has a private bathroom and guests upstairs share a kitchen and living space. Much of the art that adorns the suites is for sale.

Escapes in the city center

Huntley House, 874 N. Liberty St.
Now known as Robert Hall, the property has housed many different businesses since the early 1900s. Five guest rooms offer close access to breweries, galleries, restaurants, and shops in and around Industry Hill.

Shaffner Inn, 150 Marshall St. SW
The Tudor Revival-style residence was built in the early 1900s and now welcomes visitors right off Salem Parkway downtown.
