History
Did you know the Matthew Miksch House was the first single-family home in Salem, built in 1771? It doubled as a small shop selling candles, tobacco, and other products. The Miksch Tobacco Shop is the oldest tobacco shop is the oldest tobacco shop still on its original site in the US. Look for it in Old Salem.

Last week, we asked which ingredient is allegedly NOT a part of the Piedmont Punch — here’s what you said:

55% of you answered “mango juice” — hooray!
30% responded “almond extract”
The remaining 15% were split between apple juice and lemon.
WStoday reader Carol R. told us she had a recollection of the famous drink: “I worked for Piedmont Airlines starting in 1984. My dad started working for the airline in 1962. I was a Piedmont frequent flyer starting at birth. Piedmont Punch was a family favorite. It’s so sad that it vanished along with the airline.”
Fun fact about your editor: My dad got me into running at 7 years old, and I’ve loved running since then — I ran track all throughout high school, but stopped in college. I’ve tried the Twin City Track club, and it’s a fun way to meet people and challenge yourself. I highly recommend (even if you think you’re not a runner).
