We can’t think of a better way to soak in Winston-Salem’s green space than spending some time on the links. Whether you’re looking to connect outdoors with friends or you’re honing in on the perfect swing, here are 16 golf courses to make a tee time around the Twin City.
Members only
Maple Chase Golf and Country Club, 5475 Germanton Rd. | Golf architect Ellis Maples designed this 18-hole course on 150 acres of farm pasture and woodlands. The driving range has been renovated and a 9,000-sqft driving range was added to give members space to practice.
Public courses
Meadowlands Golf Club, 542 Meadowlands Dr. | This course is the only one in the Triad region designed by Hale Irwin, one of the world’s leading golfers in the mid-1970s and 1980s. Pro tip: get more bang for your buck when you become a “member for a day”.
A short drive
Country Club Golf Center, 5675 Country Club Rd. | This driving range is perfect for golfers of all skill levels. Two PGA professionals are on site to offer lessons and repairs.
Wake Up Winston | 8-9 a.m. | Vivian H. Burke Public Safety Center | Free | Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Real Time Crime Center at this month’s Wake Up Winston, hosted by The Winston-Salem Police Foundation.*
Creative Flow | 7-10 p.m. | The D.O.S.E Collective | Donations accepted | Join an evening where all crafts and artistic mediums meet and collaborate on their projects.
Friday, Aug. 15
Beekeeping Walking Tour | Friday, Aug. 15-Saturday, Aug. 16 | 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. | Old Salem Museums & Gardens | $30 | Celebrate World Honeybee Day with live hive demonstrations, honey production, and fun facts about beekeeping.
Innovation & Cinema: School of Rock | 7-10 p.m. | Bailey Park | Free | Get ready to jam out on the lawn of Bailey Park to hard rock, heavy metal, and rock and roll. Bring a chair or blanket.
Saturday, Aug. 16
Boots & Brews | 6-10 p.m. | WinMock at Kinderton, Bermuda Run | $75 | Grab your boots for a night of Southern charm — enjoy a barbecue dinner, sip on signature cocktails, and learn to line dance with the live instructor.
REV ON: The Foreigner Experience Concert | 7-9 p.m. | Shallowford Square | Free | The six powerhouse musicians/vocalists will deliver classic rock/pop hits with electric entertainers that’ll make you want to join the dance floor.
Rural Hall Historic Train Depot is full steam ahead. The historic train station will celebrate its open house on Saturday, Aug. 16 from 1 to 3 p.m. at 8170 Depot St. in Rural Hall. Explore the Depot, climb aboard the caboose, or play board games — and you can’t miss the free ice cream. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.

$2.2 billion. That’s how much Gildan Activewear is willing to pay to acquire HanesBrands. The company is known for owning American Apparel and Peds. The deal is expected to close later this year or early next year once HanesBrands shareholders approve the sale. (WXII 12 News)
Traffic
Get ready for a detour if you’re planning on traveling on US52. The northbound ramps near Hanes Mill Road will be closed, starting Monday, Aug. 18 through Wednesday, Sept. 17. Crews will work on widening the road, adding more lanes, but fear not — here are the detour routes.

Forsyth Tech President Dr. Janet N. Spriggs has been named the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) Southern Region Chief Executive Officer of the Year. The award honors leaders committed to student success. Spriggs will represent the Southern Region nationally at the ACCT Awards Gala, taking place in October.
