Get a side of history when you dine at Bernardin’s. The upscale restaurant is located in the oldest home in the former town of Winston. We’re dishing on the unique history of the Zevely House.
Labor of love
Master cabinetmaker Van Neman Zevely built the two-story, Flemish bond brick house in 1815. Its location is part of what makes its origin interesting. Though Zevely and Johanna Shober were Moravian members, Salem elders denied their request to marry. They wed anyway. As a result, they couldn’t live in Salem — so Shober’s father gave them 160 acres near Peters Creek.
The house’s route included traveling portions of Trade, Liberty, and West 5th streets.

At the time it was built, the house was in the woods outside of Winston, but railroad expansion and the growing tobacco industry extended town boundaries. The house ended up along Old Town Road — which eventually became Oak Street — north of West 7th Street.

Austin Allison sold his first company to Zillow for $120 million. Now he’s building another real estate innovator in Pacaso.
Pacaso has already made $110 million+ in gross profits to date by disrupting the $1.3 trillion vacation home market, and the same big investors that backed Uber and eBay have already invested.
But unlike Austin’s previous companies, everyday investors (like you) can invest in Pacaso as a private company. Over 10,000 individuals already have.
