WStoday: Wachovia Bank and Trust Company Building in Winston-Salem
If you look at the top of the building closely, you’ll see there’s a darker shade of bricks that make up the construction of the building. | Photo by WStoday
Did you know this Wachovia National Bank and Trust Company Building was the tallest building in Winston-Salem in 1915? Its construction had initiated a “skyscraper war” within the state of North Carolina. The Wachovia Bank was one of the leading banks in the South and one of the largest in the nation.

Today, the historic building serves as a luxury apartment complex called Eight West Third Apartments. Next time you walk by, take an extra minute to look up or, better yet — register to take a tour to learn about the historic downtown in real time.
