News Notes

Announced

Breathe easy — downtown parking just got a holiday upgrade. From Thursday, Nov. 27, through Jan. 2, 2026, enjoy free on-street parking downtown. City officials say the temporary change is to encourage shopping local and supporting small businesses. Parking lots and decks will keep their standard hourly rates.

Real Estate

After 41 years of vacancy, The old Skyland School building in East Winston-Salem is close to having a new life. A local nonprofit, The Feelings Company, bought the property to preserve the legacy and history of the community. The space will be turned into a community hub that offers educational resources for locals of all ages. (WXII 12 News)

Outdoors

A new park could open up in early 2026. Forsyth County officials unanimously voted to turn the 200-acre park off Doral Drive into a headquarters for the Cooperative Extension Service — complete with horse trails, stables, walking trails, a playground, a shelter, and an exhibition garden. The price tag? $21.8 million, with the county covering more than half of the cost. (Winston-Salem Journal)

Travel

82 million. That’s how many Americans are projected to travel 50+ miles for Thanksgiving — a new AAA record. If friends and family are driving to you, make their trip even more memorable by taking them to visit Winston-Salem’s most iconic landmarks.

Film

October saw the lowest revenue generated by movie ticket sales in almost three decades — excluding 2020 for obvious reasons. With the holiday season on the horizon, and Oscar season in full swing, we recommend catching a flick at a/perture cinema to help keep cinema alive. (Variety)

Pets

Why are there so many dog breeds? New research suggests the phenomena did not begin as recently as generally believed, and in fact, started 11,000 years ago. Whether you’re rocking a miniature poodle in a handbag, or you’re eye-level with your Irish wolfhound, all shapes and sizes are welcome at the Twin City’s dog-friendly spots. (Reuters)
