🧭 To the high seas we go

A night time photo of Qingdao's skyline in China. A bunch of high rises and sky scrapers are lit in different colors and their lights are reflected in still water in front. The sun is setting to the far left of screen a while back, and most of the sky is pretty dark blue.

Do you recognize this city? It’s on the same latitude as Winston-Salem, 7,290 miles away. | Photo via Canva

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you walked in a straight line around the world from Winston-Salem? Wonder no longer, wanderer.

Let us introduce you to LatLon Connect, an online tool that allows users to explore cities across the world that share the same latitude and longitude.

Here’s what we found

In our search, we stuck with the default settings, looking for places with 100,000+ people with a buffer zone of 6.21 miles (that’s 10 kilometers).

Dozens of results popped up, with the most populated place lying on the other side of the world: the Chinese port of Qindgao, pictured above. Over 10 million people call the city’s metropolitan area home.

The largest US city WS is aligned with? Nashville, Tennessee (hey, NASHtoday). We won’t spoil which other cities we found. Explore for yourself.

News Notes

Announced

Toyota is planning to double the workforce at its Liberty battery plant. In fact, it’s more than double. By 2034, Toyota wants to have 5,100 employees at the Randolph County facility, up from the current 2,500. Plans also include increased electric vehicle output. (Triad Business Journal)

Number

$63 million. That’s how much MacKenzie Scott just donated to North Carolina A&T as part of her historic philanthropic efforts to aid educational institutions across the country. It’s the second university in the Triad she’s helped recently — she gave $50 million to WSSU last week

Open

Late last week, High Point opened its first hotel in two decades. Developers spent $21 million on the SpringHill Suites by Marriott — a unique property that previously housed a century-old hosiery mill. Officials hope it will be a catalyst for downtown growth. (Triad Business Journal)

Civic

Buildings and venues around Winston-Salem might be getting some new names soon. The city has appointed SportsMan Solutions to lead its new Naming Rights and Sponsorship Program. On their radar: the Winston Salem Fairgrounds Arena and Bowman Gray Stadium.
Have you tried the cheesesteaks at Philly Masters yet? The food truck opened earlier this year, and is cooking up a storm as it voyages around the Triad. Take a peek behind the curtain at the cheesy, delectable goodness. (Winston-Salem Journal)
