It’s National Poetry Month, a season that celebrates poets and their craft. Grab your pen and notebook, and get crafting. The Bookhouse is celebrating the month, hosting local poets every Saturday in April, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Here’s the lineup:
  • Saturday, April 4 – Jacinta White
  • Friday, April 10 – Poetry slam @ 7 p.m. (Bring three pieces of poetry to perform)
  • Saturday, April 11 – Barbara Greenbaum & Courtney Perry
  • Saturday, April 18 – Spencer Brown & Sam Brbee
  • Saturday, April 25 – Joe Mills & Jenny Bates
Guests can chat with authors about their work and creative process, plus discover new poetry collections.

Can’t make those dates? Delurk Gallery is hosting Fresh Ink Open Mic on the second Monday of each month. Bring your essay, poem, script, or lyrics to share at 6:30 p.m. Each spoken word will have a seven-minute limit. Attend the next event on Monday, April 13.

Open

Say hello to Winston-Salem’s newest Mexican restaurant. California Burrito Express & Bar is now open near Hanes Mall Boulevard, taking over the former Luna Playa space. The spot is open daily, serving build-your-own burritos, along with cocktails.

Environment

Get ready to put your green thumb to use. Winston-Salem’s free annual mulch giveaway is here. Starting today, April 3, Forsyth County homeowners can pick up free leaf mulch at the Forum 52 Yard Waste Facility, between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Pro tip: The entrance is located at the end of Northstar Drive, behind the warehouses.

Traffic

Part of Fourth Street will close as contractors replace the roof of the Stevens Center, starting Monday, April 6, at 6 a.m. Roads between Marshall Street and Spruce Street will be closed through Sunday, April 12. The sidewalk on the south side of Fourth Street will stay open to pedestrians.

Thinking of starting a business or have one already? Apply for the city’s loan assistance program. Business owners can request any amount between $5,000 and $100,000, which can be used for renovations, equipment, and other costs related to start-up or expansion.

Truist Stadium is turning into a card collector’s dream. Nearly 200 vendors will showcase sports cards, Pokémon, comics, memorabilia, and other treasures tomorrow, April 4, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bring your cards to trade or sell. Tickets cost $5 for entry.
