How well do you know the laws in our state? A few months ago, we created a list of things that are illegal in Winston-Salem and today, we’re here to enlighten you even more on some rules you may not know exist in NC. Get ready for round two.

Killing a snake

Rattlesnakes are among NC’s 37 snake species under the state’s endangered wildlife protection law. There are a total of seven species that are protected. Here’s a guide on properly identifying a venomous snake.

Borrowing someone’s dog

Sharing is caring, but when it comes to furry four-legged friends, you might want to reconsider borrowing them. This also goes for horses and mules. Those who take these animals for a temporary period of time will be found guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor.

Stealing kitchen grease

Don’t get slick with kitchen grease. According to NC General Statute § 14-79.2., carrying kitchen grease without consent is a violation that could result in a $1,000 penalty + a Class 1 misdemeanor. If the value of the grease is valued at more than $1,000, violators can get charged with a Class H felony.

Giving cash prizes during game night

The price isn’t right. Cash prizes aren’t allowed during game night events. That also means gift cards by a financial institution or the business are a no-no. Participants can only win through a raffle. (See page 21.)

Not paying excise taxes on illegal drugs

Businesses must pay 40 cents for each gram of marijuana they purchase to the state and up to $200 for each 10 dosage units that is not sold by weight.
