The Liberian Organization of the Piedmont (LOP) will celebrate its inaugural International Liberation Gala at Benton Convention Center Saturday, Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. The “Champions of Freedom” fundraising ceremony will host His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr., president of the Republic of Liberia + city officials.

The evening will include dinner, music, dancing, cultural presentations, and remarks. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward LOP’s housing project in Happy Hill. It will assist international students from Liberia who receive scholarships to attend nearby universities and community colleges.

“Though our ancestors were once enslaved on this land, converting the property to transform the minds of young Liberian scholars would bring honor to their memories and legacy,” said Dr. James Y. Hunder Sr., the founding president and chair of LOP.

Tickets to attend the black tie event start at $100. Sales end Thursday, Sept. 19.
