Where to take adult classes in Winston-Salem

Remember those days? Fresh haircut, backpack in hand, ready to conquer the classroom. Although those days may be long gone for some, the thrill of learning never gets old. That’s why we’re giving you the scoop on personal enrichment courses in the Twin City that’ll spark your creativity and keep your mind sharp.

Forsyth County Public Library
There’s a lot more than books at these 10 branches. Budding entrepreneurs can get guidance on starting a small business + visitors can check out the 3D printer and other technology in the central library’s makerspace. Classes, events, and book clubs engage adults in everything from Tai Chi to writing + discussing short stories.

Wake Forest University
Summer registration for Lifelong Learning classes is open, ranging from Greek mythology to the science of the supernatural. These personal enrichment courses are taught by faculty and community experts in the field. Classes usually take place once a week on campus for two hours. Cost is $180 per class.

Forsyth Tech
Choose from hundreds of personal enrichment courses, from real estate to writing novels. Online classes are offered if you prefer learning from the comfort of your own home, or hit the books and head to class (typically once a week).

For history lovers

Muse WS
Join Afternoon Book & Coffee Discussions, centered around the history of North Carolina. Guest speakers and moderators will dive into a featured book at MUSE Winston-Salem’s new building on South Liberty Street. Admission is free.

Old Salem (MESDA)
Celebrate America’s 250th birthday with “Spot Talks” featuring historians exploring the history of our country on Fridays. The next “Spot Talk” will look at the lives of women in the early South. Entry is included with the admission ticket of Old Salem/MESDA. Pro tip: If you’re more crafty, check out workshops on Saturdays.

For the explorers

NCMA, Winston-Salem
Turn the Twin City into your classroom with NCMA Field Trips. Explore places that shape arts and culture in the Triad and learn how they connect to local history. Save these upcoming field trip dates: Culture WS (Saturday, May 28) + Delta Arts Center (Saturday, Jun. 11). Pro tip: register early as spaces fill up quickly. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged.

Vecino Center for Language and Culture
Learn a foreign language in adult beginner courses or schedule private lessons to get one-on-one coaching. Conversation hours allow students and community members to get to know each other and explore different cultures. Group classes start at $175.

Mixxer Community Makerspace
A membership will allow you to use the space and take advantage of on-demand training. Use your hands + mind to create in a variety of workshops and classes, like 3D printing or sewing.

The Little Theatre of Winston-Salem
Registrations are open for adult summer camps, from improv classes to exploring 16th-century Italian comedy. The one-week intensive course is designed to help you discover a new character within yourself — maybe even inspiring you to join a community theater group.

Sawtooth School for Visual Art
The community art and craft school has been offering classes to students of all ages since 1945. Studios are located downtown and at the Generations Center. Browse class offerings, which range from textiles to photography.
