If your goals involve getting outside more or leveling up your weekly walks, you’re in luck — 2023 is the Year of the Trail in NC. This campaign celebrates our state’s vast network of trails, greenways, and blueways through guided adventures, learning opportunities, workdays, and more.

In 2021, the NC General Assembly designated 2023 as the Year of the Trail. Why? This year marks the 50th anniversary of the 1973 North Carolina Trails System Act, which created the NC Trails Program.

NC is the Great Trails State and it shows. Trails are the cornerstone of outdoor recreation in NC, which provides 260,000+ jobs and has an economic impact of more than $28 billion. The state has 12 state trails and 40+ state parks with hundreds of miles of trails (think: Hanging Rock and Pilot Mountain State Parks).

UNCSA’s “The Nutcracker” is moving to a new space this season

This December, students at UNC School of the Arts will perform their annual showing of “The Nutcracker” at the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts in Greensboro. Their usual venue — the Stevens Center — will be undergoing renovations.

UNCSA students have put on “The Nutcracker” in Winston-Salem since 1966. While Greensboro’s mayor said she’s thrilled for the opportunity to host, Winston-Salem Mayor Pro Tem D.D. Adams jokingly reminded her the arrangement is for one year only. The show will return to the City of Arts and Innovation in 2024.

Tickets to performances start at $35. Audiences this year will get a special treat too — the ballet’s symphony orchestra will be conducted by UNCSA Chancellor Brian Cole.

From the editor
I finally binge-watched “Break Point” on Netflix and it made me so excited for the Winston-Salem Open later this month. Winston-Salem operates 112 tennis courts citywide but those at Oak Summit Park and Leinbach Park are currently closed for repaving.
