We all need a staycation or a trip to a different city from time to time. Whether you’re a Winstonian feeling a little cooped up or a visitor looking for a special Twin City experience, picking the perfect home away from home is crucial.

We went looking for unique lodgings around town that showcase that artistic and innovative spirit. So choose your ideal digs, pack your bags, and get ready for a memorable getaway.

Artistic sanctuaries

West Salem Art Hotel, 912 Albert St.

Each room in this hotel offers an experience as unique as the decor. Short-term rentals are available for the Rose Room, the ART/partment, the Parisian Suite, or the VHS Suite. Each room has a private bathroom and guests upstairs share a kitchen and living space. Much of the art that adorns the suites is for sale.

Hideaways with history

Historic Brookstown Inn Hotel, 200 Brookstown Ave. | Miss Sally the resident cat greets guests at this restored hotel and event space. Each of the 70 rooms and suites highlight the history of the old Salem Manufacturing Company mill. Guests can enjoy a large courtyard, a complimentary hot breakfast, and works by local artist Leland Powers — or venture to local cafes and restaurants within walking distance.

Rooms with a view

Kimpton Cardinal Hotel, 51 4th St. E.
What was once the headquarters of RJ Reynolds and the architectural inspiration for the Empire State Building is now an upscale hotel in the city’s center. Filled with art deco glamour + a French brasserie and bar, you’ll feel like you stepped back to time. Guests can also bring furry family members and have fun in the lower level recreation center.

Bathroom with black vanity and soaking tub inside a standing shower. Pink flowers are on the sink counter. A window overlooks two smokestacks outside.

Today marks five years since I became a US citizen. I was born in Cameroon and my family and I moved to Washington, DC when I was 13. I’m so grateful to be living here and to celebrate the symbols of freedom, unity, and patriotism that the flag represent.
