Today is the first day of summer. We know the question on your mind, how hot is it going to get this year? Thanks to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, we know what temperatures and precipitation trends to expect in Winston-Salem for June, July, and August.

While exact weather conditions typically can’t be predicted more than a week in advance, here’s a seasonal outlook to help you prepare for what summer will bring.

Temperature

Prepare for the heat. There’s a 40 to 50% chance Winston-Salem will experience higher-than-normal summer temperatures.

Precipitation

Let the rain wash your worries away. The Twin City has a 40-50% chance of seeing higher rainfall this summer.

Drought

Drought conditions are expected to remain steady this season.

June

Winston-Salem is likely to experience its first mid-to-upper 90 degree day this weekend. When it comes to rain, expect a few showers, though it will typically dry for the rest of the month.

July

This is the hottest month of the year in NC. A normal summer average high temperature is approximately 85 degrees in Winston-Salem based on 2023’s trends, so expect upper 90s — maybe even triple digits — based on the increase forecasters predict this season.

Pro tip: Make sure to check the National Weather Service’s heat map tool to see if you’re in a high-heat risk area.

August

Prepare to experience slightly decreasing temperatures with higher chances of rain as we transition to fall. Totally rainfall averages about 4.36 inches in the Twin City.

Forecasters predict a 65% chance of La Niña persisting through September, so keep your umbrella handy this month. Normal low temperatures will likely stick around the upper 70s to upper 80s.

The Twin City boasts arts and innovation. Combined with its Southern charm, it’s no wonder Winston-Salem is ranked among the top places to live in the US.

According to Livability Editor-in Chief Amanda Ellis, here are the top five factors that influence moving to a new place.
  • New job
  • Education/schools
  • Family
  • Fresh start
  • Cut costs
According to the US Census Bureau, Forsyth County has a total population of 382,590 people, with a projected growth of one percent every year. Ellis noted that Winston-Salem thrives when it comes to housing and living costs. The city ranked No. 10 on Forbes’ list of the 25 Best Cities for Renters and No. 1 in the study’s affordability category in 2024.
