It’s electric. Shiny new hybrid-electric buses will soon hit Winston-Salem streets. City Council approved the purchase of five new hybrid-electric buses to replace its fixed-route buses. The total projected cost comes to $5,232,900.
Follow the money
The purchase is made possible thanks to the Low- and No- Emission Grant Program the city secured earlier this year. The Federal Transit Administration approved $4.4 million for the project and the city committed to match ~$788,000.
This new purchase will improve transit services while reducing harmful emissions. The city is partnering with New Flyer of America, a manufacturing company that provides clean and sustainable buses and technology to provide these new additions. Each bus costs a little over $1 million.
The future is bright
Buses are expected to be delivered 12 to 16 months from the date they’re ordered. The grant will also provide about $64,000 worth of training and workforce development activities to educate staff on how to operate and maintain these specialized vehicles for longevity.

Earlier this week we asked what unusual law is not illegal in NC, here’s what you said:
Singing off key — 35% Not all of us can have the powerful voice of Queen Bey. According to NC regulation, singing off key can fall under “disturbing the peace.” It’s unlikely you’ll be fined or arrested as this law was an attempt to maintain order back in the 19th century.
Placing recyclable objects in a bin — 33% Yep, you can dispose of that item in a bin. (Not that you needed our permission).
Sneezing on city streets— 21% Word has it it’s illegal to sneeze in the streets of Asheville. This law may be outdated but think about a time when it was enforced.
Playing bingo for more than five hours — 11% You can’t have too much fun with this one. Law mandates bingo to be five hours or less.
I’m super excited for all the fun activities this weekend. I’m especially eyeing the Summer Dance Social this Sunday at Tanglewood Park. It’s going to be a blast. I hope you get out this weekend and do something fun with your loved ones.
