The countdown to Election Day is on. Here’s what you need to know as you prepare to cast your ballot on or before Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Registration guidelines

Date you need to know: Friday, Oct. 11

You must be registered to vote in the 2024 election. Use the NC State Board of Elections’ voter search tool to check if you’re registered. If your status as a voter is “inactive” you do not need to register again.

If you need to register, you must do so by 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11, unless you plan to vote early. Check that you meet eligibility requirements first, then complete a voter registration form. Mail it to the Forsyth County Board of Elections office (201 N. Chestnut St.) or return it in person. If you opt for mail, it must be postmarked by the Oct. 11 deadline.

Absentee by mail voting

Dates you need to know: Tuesday, Oct. 29 + Tuesday, Nov. 5

If you prefer not to vote in person, you have the opportunity to vote by mail using an absentee ballot. The deadline to request a ballot by mail or online through the NC Absentee Ballot Portal is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29. Be sure to read the form instructions carefully and submit all required accompanying documentation. If you request a ballot but opt to vote in person, you can still do so during early voting or on Election Day.

According to new absentee voting laws, the Forsyth County Board of Elections must receive your absentee ballot no later than 7:30 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 5. That means you’ll need to deliver it in person or make sure it is mailed enough time in advance. Be aware the cost to return an absentee ballot by mail is $1.77, the cost of three “Forever” stamps. You can track your ballot using BallotTrax.

Winston-Salem’s LGBTQ+ international film festival returns for its 11th year with film screenings, parties, and workshops. OUT at the Movies is hosting events around the Twin City today, Oct. 3 through Sunday, Oct. 6.

The nonprofit organization was founded in 2004 to celebrate the best of LGBTQ+ cinema and highlight the community and its allies. Organizers saw a 40% increase in submissions for this year’s festival. A total of 43 films will be screened over three days.

“There were seven or eight feature films that absolutely would have made the festival slate in previous years that didn’t make the cut in 2024. But we are planning to show some of these as part of our year-round screening series,” said Executive Director Rex Welton.

You can purchase an all-access festival pass for $75. Showtimes, synopses, and tickets to all events are available online.
