They say life passes you by in the blink of an eye, but life doesn’t have to get boring as one ages. Cue Senior Services, an idea that got started in the 1970s after a Harvard Divinity School theologian, Harvey Cox, called on churches to look beyond their own institutions and to address the social needs of the community.

After many meals, gatherings, and activities, church leaders recognized an influx of older adults who needed extra care. Three churches downtown joined forces and established Creative Life Centers, Inc. (CLC), which is known today as Senior Services, in 1974. A year later, CLC established its first adult day care center at 920 W. First St., which is now part of Truist Stadium.

As the need grew, Senior Services expanded its avenues of support, including salon services in-house, rehabilitation therapy spaces, and a secured outdoor area — most of which still exists today. The organization expanded to a bigger facility over the years, and most recently, settled in the Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness, which opened in early 2024.

Post of the Day

WStoday: Harvest Supermoon over downtown Winston-Salem skyline at night, showcasing a glowing yellow moon in a clear black sky.
Post via @thatoneflick
Did you get to look up at the sky at night this week? You would’ve noticed this full moon, which occurred Oct. 6-7. Traditionally, the harvest moon marked the start of hunting season as hunters prepared for the winter months ahead. Check out the Forsyth Astronomical Society if you’re all about stars, constellations, and love geeking out about astronomy.
