#GivingTuesday is a global movement to encourage acts of kindness that make our communities stronger. Last year, Americans donated $3.6 billion on Giving Tuesday. If you’re looking for a place to give this year, here are eight local organizations you can donate to:
  • SECU Family House | Your gift will help provide lodging and support for adult patients and their families. Each donation is matched.
  • Crossby Scholars Community Partnership | Your dollar will go toward providing college access and readiness programs for first-generation and underrepresented students in Forsyth County.
  • Second Harvest Food Bank Northwest NC | Each gift will be matched dollar for dollar and will go toward providing food for underserved neighbors.
  • H.O.P.E. of Winston-Salem | Donations go toward fresh fruits and vegetables for families struggling with food insecurity.
  • Family Services | Funds will provide counseling services, private childcare, and parenting courses for families experiencing domestic issues.
  • Triad Restorative Justice | Each contribution equips the organization, which provides programs for conflict resolution for at-risk teenagers.

Coming Soon

Winstonians may see a new and modernized grocery store on the corner of Hanes Mall Boulevard and Kester Mill Road. Earlier this year, the planning board recommended the remodeling of Myers Grocery. The current building is slated for demolition. We’ll keep you posted on an opening date.

Seasonal

Let there be light. Join Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center‘s annual Moravian star lighting ceremony at 5:45 p.m. today, Dec. 2. The ceremony will take place at the top level of Wake Forest Baptist’s Eden Terrace parking deck off Hawthorne Road. Get cozy with a cup of hot apple cider, hot chocolate, and Moravian cookies, which will be served for free.

Traffic

Expect a traffic pattern change if you’re commuting around Winston Lake. Crews will inspect and clean sewer lines and manholes in the surrounding area on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and some Saturdays are included. A lane may be closed for brief periods for safety purposes. The project is expected to be complete by late April.

Civic

Just like the weather changes, new NC laws are taking effect, starting this month. Window tints will no longer be part of vehicle safety inspections, but drivers will still be required to roll down their tinted windows during traffic stops, according to the law. Keep reading on more changes. (WXII 12 News)

Closed

K&W Cafeterias announced it will close all its locations permanently, effective immediately. The cafeteria chain has been serving communities for over 88 years, including its two locations in Winston-Salem. Owners did not give a reason for closing. There are plenty of new and coming-soon dining spots in the Twin City.

Ranked

The Buy

The perfect two-piece sweater set for winter. It features a long sleeve crew neck top paired with a split hem midi skirt. We love that it’s cute, comfy, and warm, and can be dressed up or down for any occasion. Bonus: It’s available in some great seasonal colorways like almond white + red white.

There are plenty of ways to spread holiday cheer this season, including volunteering for The Salvation Army, helping make dreams come true. The local nonprofit needs helping hands throughout the Triad area.
