Managing Editor Eric here. There’s not much cooler than dinosaurs — except maybe dinos you can climb on. Driving I-40 on our way from Blowing Rock to the Triangle, my family stopped in Winston-Salem to explore the dinosaur playground at Washington Park. My 3-year-old daughter couldn’t get enough of the towering and toothy reptiles, though they’re technically better suited to slightly older kids.

Next time we’re in town, we’ll pick another spot on this guide to Winston-Salem parks — though if it’s up to me, we’re headed to The Quarry at Grant Park.

News Notes

Number

$1.4 million. That’s how much All In For Our Schools raised in its school supply fundraising campaign in Forsyth County, meeting its goal. The group has raised over $8 million for our county school system since the school year began. (WFDD)

Eat

Dinner date inspo incoming. Check out OpenTable’s annual list of the top 10 most-booked restaurants in WS to plan your next culinary outing, from Mozelle’s to Betty on Burke.

Ranked

More people moved to North Carolina than to any state except for Texas and Florida last year. That’s according to a new report from U-Haul tracking one-way trips. But many headed to the Raleigh and Charlotte metro areas, with the Triad excluded from the rankings. That’s fine — we’ll keep our lower cost of living.

Sports

The Cardiac Cats are in the playoffs, and they’ll be kicking off in Charlotte this Saturday, Jan. 10. But how to get there? WFMY has the scoop on why the train may be your best bet to see the Panthers — and don’t forget our Amtrak guide. (WFMY)

Development

We’re No. 1. Site Selection Magazine ranked North Carolina as the best state for workforce development, news that Gov. Josh Stein celebrated at an event in nearby Whitsett. Learn more about NC’s workforce dev efforts.

Edu

One way to have a strong workforce — exposing kids to a range of career options. The Kim Shaw ACE Academy does just that, introducing middle and high school students to aviation careers on the ground and in the air through an inspiring camp experience. Take a closer look. (FOX 8)

That’s a lot of teddy bears. The Twin City Thunderbirds shared that fans have donated more than 8,000 stuffed bears for “local first responders to help comfort children during emergency calls.”

Well done, Winston.

The Wrap

I moved away from the Triad in 2018, but living nearby in Raleigh, I’ve kept a list of new dining spots I want to try in the Twin City.

Noodle Ju’B, Bobby Boy, Dutch Light, Six Hundred, Little Pep, and Heff’s are all on there — but what other spots from the last five years or so are top of your list? Let me know by responding to this email.
