Taking the train isn’t just for commuters — it’s also a method of leisure travel that’s growing in popularity.

Train travel is booming. In the last year, The National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak) has served 24+ million riders, and in 2023, Greensboro’s station served 157,429.

The more sustainable, often scenic, and middle seat-less cousin to flying, train travel could play a part in your next vacation — here’s how to do it locally.

Stations near us

While Winston-Salem doesn’t have an Amtrak station of its own (yet), there are several within a 45-minute drive:

All three include daily and overnight parking, but you can also park at the Clark Campbell Transportation Center + get to your station via bus.

Meet the Carolinian

All three stations use trains on the Carolinian, Crescent, and Piedmont routes.

  • WiFi | Carolinian trains come equipped with free WiFi, so you can keep scrolling WStoday. Pro tip: Outlets are more accessible in first or business class + sleeper cars.
  • Food + Drink | The Carolinian has its own cafe menu, but no other food and beverage services.
  • Accommodations | The Carolinian features coach and business class seating. You can reserve sleeper cars on Crescent trains.

Where it takes you

Maybe you’ll take the midnight train, but you don’t wanna go just anywhere. Check out a few places you can get from all three stations. Prices and travel times vary by trip and station.

  • Charlotte, NC | ~1-2-hour trip | Coach: $10-$25 | Business: $25-$40 | Private rooms: $200-$500
  • Atlanta, GA | ~7-8-hour trip | Coach: $55-80 | Private rooms: $280-550
  • Boston, MA | ~15-18 or ~25-26-hour trip | Coach: $110-$400 | Business: $215-$600 | Private rooms: $700-$1200

Just down the track…

In December 2023, Winston-Salem received a $500,000 grant to explore adding new passenger rail routes.
