Wondering what your taxes are going? City officials approved two new budget proposals during the city council meeting this week. Here are some big takeaways:
Transportation
Winston-Salem Transit Authority (WSTA) will introduce (watch at 28:25) two crosstown routes that bypass downtown to connect people with their jobs.
Less popular routes will be discontinued + WSTA will increase frequency of popular routes (going from 60 minutes to 30 minutes).

Nearly $6.25 million in MPO grant approval is pending, which would provide micro-transits in underserved areas over a three-year pilot period. If approved, these micro-transits will launch in the Northwest + Southeast zones. The estimated launch date is January 2027.
Public safety
City council approved (watch at 42:28) a $1.96 million budget to increase salaries for Winston-Salem Fire Department employees to remain competitive with nearby markets.

Watch the works of UNCSA drama and filmmaking students during the One-Act Plays Showcase on Saturday, April 11. These seniors will perform one last time before pursuing their careers in the field. Entry is free, but donations are accepted.
History
Union Station celebrated its 100th anniversary this week. The historic landmark provided rail services between 1926 and 1970, helping connect people to nearby cities. Today, it is home to city offices and also serves as an event space. Read up on its history.

Speaking of turning 100 years old, Wiley Middle School will celebrate 100 years of history on Thursday, April 16, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at RJ Reynolds Auditorium. Former Miss America Nia Franklin will be there to sing the National Anthem.

Let’s hear a round of applause for Winston-Salem State University coach Tierra Terry, who was named the Clarence “Big House” Gaines College Basketball Coach of the Year by the National Sports Media Association. The 90th edition of the Masters returns to the screens today, April 9. Did you know Joe Johnson was the first African American to win the Forsyth Invitational Golf Tournament at the Winston Lake golf course in 1966?
