Wondering what your taxes are going? City officials approved two new budget proposals during the city council meeting this week. Here are some big takeaways:

Transportation

  • Winston-Salem Transit Authority (WSTA) will introduce (watch at 28:25) two crosstown routes that bypass downtown to connect people with their jobs.
  • Less popular routes will be discontinued + WSTA will increase frequency of popular routes (going from 60 minutes to 30 minutes).

  • Nearly $6.25 million in MPO grant approval is pending, which would provide micro-transits in underserved areas over a three-year pilot period. If approved, these micro-transits will launch in the Northwest + Southeast zones. The estimated launch date is January 2027.

Public safety

  • City council approved (watch at 42:28) a $1.96 million budget to increase salaries for Winston-Salem Fire Department employees to remain competitive with nearby markets.
