Wondering what your taxes are going? City officials approved two new budget proposals during the city council meeting this week. Here are some big takeaways:
Transportation
- Winston-Salem Transit Authority (WSTA) will introduce (starts at 28:25) two crosstown routes that bypass downtown to connect people with their jobs.
- Less popular routes will be discontinued + WSTA will increase frequency of popular routes (going from 60 minutes to 30 minutes).
- Nearly $6.25 million in MPO grant approval is pending, which would provide micro-transits in underserved areas over a three-year pilot period. If approved, these micro-transits will launch in the Northwest + Southeast zones. The estimated launch date is January 2027.
- Micro-transits work like an on-demand rideshare service, serving residents based on demand.
- Five new fixed route buses expected to roll out in May
- Starting Monday, April 13, riders will be able to use their smartphone or smart card via UMO to pay fares, find bus schedules, and track passes within the app.
Public Safety
- City Council approved (starts at 42:28) a $1.96 million budget to increase salaries for Winston-Salem Fire Department employees to remain competitive with nearby markets.
- City officials have approved $500,000 to be withdrawn from the FY2025-2026 total general fund expenditure to adjust the new change, effective this April.
- Certified fire employees will receive a 4.32 pay increase + Battalion Chiefs will receive a 9.53% increase.
City Council also unanimously approved the construction of a new Duke Energy substation at the corner of North Patterson Avenue and Northwest Boulevard. The education panels will honor the history of the neighborhood, with the theme “Once Upon a Corner.” Duke Energy will fund the program and fully cover its installation.
