The 2023-2024 season for the Carolina Thunderbirds is underway. Here’s the action you can expect on the ice:

Eyes on the prize

The single A minor professional hockey team in the Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL). They’ve been in Winston-Salem since 2017, and have their sights set on a second title. The team won the Commissioner’s Cup in 2019 and made it to the finals last season.

Head coach Steve Harrison, aka “Coach Harry,” is in his first season with the Thunderbirds. April Ogle, the franchise’s director of marketing, says fans are already noticing his impact.

“Fans were saying in our home opener that they were already seeing that type of unity on the ice and they were attributing it to our new head coach,” Ogle told WStoday.

Flock together

Thunderbirds fans — who call themselves “The Flock” — have been voted the best fans in the FPHL. More than 15,000 fans follow the team’s Facebook page, where many team updates and announcements are posted. Home games at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Annex draw fans of all ages.

Ogle recommends securing tickets before showing up. Three different season ticket packages are still available. Here’s what else you can experience at a hockey game this season:
Crowd of people in hockey jerseys cheering on the team.

There’s plenty of pride in the stands.

A holiday favorite will return to tables in Winston-Salem this season. Ronnie’s Country Store Pop-Up will sell hams, local yams, and collard greens — and country ham biscuits with coffee for $1. The pop-up will be open Saturdays + Sundays from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Roar on North Liberty Street.

The meat is from the Frank C. Corriher family. Ronnie’s Country Store sold the same brand to local shoppers before it closed its doors nearly two years ago. The ham is aged after being hand-rubbed with salt and brown + cane sugars. It will be sold by the pound:
  • Whole ham — $7.99 per pound
  • Sliced ham — $8.99 per pound
You can also pre-order hams for pickup. There is a $30 deposit for orders placed online or by phone.
