You’re as unique as the scenes you’ll find on Winston-Salem streets. | “Hangin’ Ten in the Arts District” photo by Sharon Eng (submitted for our 2023 Picture of the Year contest)
Does where we live have any bearing on our personalities? A growing field of psychological research called geopsychology says “yes.”
According to geopsychology, those of us in Winston-Salem are more agreeable than our friends, in say, Boston. And while you may have heard about that good ol’ southern charm, now there may be a form of scientific proof to back it up.
What is it?
ResearchGate defines geopsychology as “the relationship between the complex matrix of static and time-varying geophysical and geochemical variables within a locality and human behavior.”
In other words, there’s a correlation between one’s geophysical space and one’s mind. In particular, research on the “Big Five” traits — conscientiousness, agreeableness, neuroticism, openness, and extroversion — has led researchers to create a set of personality maps for the US.
Conscientiousness
Those in the South overwhelmingly display characteristics of discipline and diligence, but the map shows small spots with a high concentration of conscientious people all over the US.
Here in the City of Arts and Innovation, we tend to be more conscientious. As an efficient, organized group, it’s no surprise we have so many thriving and exciting industries.
Openness
Like trying new things or learning new ideas? Winston-Salem is an open book. We’re more likely to be game for new experiences and often have a decent awareness of our own feelings. If you’re looking for an interesting new activity, try a staycation at one of these unique accommodations.
Extroversion
Folks living in southern and midwestern cities tend to be more extroverted than their West Coast counterparts — but Winston-Salem is on the edge of the divide. We think that means we can be the life of the party at events around town and still find time to relax + unwind with a good book or a nice cup of coffee.

I love the energy around college basketball this time of year. I’ll be cheering on my alma mater, the NC State Wolfpack, in both the men’s and women’s NCAA Tournaments. One coach for the men’s team has Winston-Salem roots — Joel Justus was a player at Mt. Tabor High School.
