Whether or not you’ve played, you may have heard of pickleball, which became the fastest-growing sport in America for the third year in a row in 2023. It combines traditional tennis, ping-pong, and badminton.

Not to make a big dill out of it, but Winston-Salem is home to 20+ pickleball courts, with plans to build new ones soon. In honor of National Pickleball Month (April), we’re passing shots knowledge on outdoor courts to put your pickling skills on.

Shaffner Park, 900 Yorkshire Rd. | Choose any of the six pickleball courts to play the sport — players have access to restrooms and water.

Union Cross Park, 1935 Union Cross Rd. | This park was one of three parks Forsyth County modified in 2015 to accommodate the fast-growing sport. Reserve your spot ahead of time to play.

Hanes Park, 1404 W. Northwest Blvd. | The Joe White Tennis Center has 20 tennis courts where you can also practice pickeball + a pro shop on site in case you need to buy gear last minute. Pro tip: Reserve your court by paying $5 for 90 minutes of play.

Joanie Moser Memorial Park, 601 Lewisville Clemmons Rd., Lewisville | The park has nine pickleball courts available for play on a first-come, first-served basis. Pro tip: Call the office ahead of time to reserve your spot.

Oak Summit Park, 370 Oak Summit Rd. | The park has six newly built courts that opened in 2023.

Sedge Garden Community Center, 401 Robbins Rd. | The park is home to 10 newly renovated courts with new fencing, nets, and court paint.

Old Town Neighborhood Center, 4550 Shattalon Dr. | Players 18+ can gather at the courts on Wednesdays between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. during open play.

More places to play are on the way. The city is planning to convert Little Creek and Old Town Parks to pickleball courts.

The Winston-Salem Transit Authority (WSTA) may soon have a new transit management service provider to improve riders’ experience.

The Public Works committee approved RATP Dev USA to enter a five-year agreement with WSTA, during the committee’s meeting on Tuesday, April 9 (Scroll ~47 minutes to watch the discussion).

City officials ended their agreement with Transdev services after the Federal Transit Administration notified the city of a non-compliance in the transportation system. RATP Dev USA has served multiple counties in NC, including Greensboro, Wake County, Durham, and Raleigh (hey, RALtoday).

RATP Dev USA is planning to bring in some new tools to improve safety and quality of riders’ experience. The total operational costs for the five-year contract will total $143 million. City Council will vote on the approval on May 6.

I think I may like pickleball more than tennis. I tried it for my first time a few days ago with some friends and it was so much fun— and intense. No wonder it’s so popular. It’s so great that Winston-Salem has so many courts where you can play and get active this summer.
