Winston-Salem’s secret sauce

A guide to Winston-Salem’s pizza scene

Whenever we’re feeling saucy, we like to dig into a slice of local pizza. Winston-Salem’s pizza scene is bubbling with options — and we keep finding ways to top ourselves. If you’re on the quest for the perfect slice, we’ve pie-oneered a list of 10+ places to grab pizza that are definitely worth the dough.

Authentic experiences

Cugino Forno, 486 N. Patterson Ave., Ste. 115 + 6316 Clemmons Point Dr., Clemmons

Many of these Neapolitan pizzas have fresh basil and vegetables, making it the perfect pie to share in Bailey Park or outside in the Coal Pit at the Winston-Salem location. If you want to make memories while learning how to make a better pizza, book a pizza making class.

The Washington Post named Cugino Forno the best Neapolitan pizzeria in NC in 2023.

Mission Pizza Napoletana, 707 Trade St. NW

The restaurant has been nominated for a James Beard award and has landed on the list of the top 50 pizzerias in the US for four consecutive years. The restaurant discourages to-go orders + reservations to dine in are recommended.

Something a little different

The Loop Restaurant, 320 S. Stratford Rd.
The restaurant is the perfect place for a pit stop while shopping at Thruway. Choose from a pizza or a pinsa (a smaller, crispy flatbread that serves 1-3 people) that’s on the menu, or make your own with ingredients like sun-dried tomato, broccoli, and bacon.

Whitaker Square Pizza, 1981 N. Peace Haven Rd.
Choose from a NY-style, Sicilian, or try “Grandma-style” — a square thin crust. There are several options that are topped with chicken, including grilled chicken, chicken parmigiano, chicken vodka, and buffalo chicken.

Zito Pizzeria and Grill, 3030 Healy Dr.
The family owned restaurant uses organic flour to make its dough fresh daily. There’s something for carnivores and vegans alike. You can also choose options without red sauce. Try a “pizza boat” if you like crust.

Local male amateur chefs and their cooking teams are bringing the heat to this year’s Men Who Cook fundraiser and they knead your help to win.

The friendly competition benefits SECU Family House — a comfortable place to stay for families visiting Winston-Salem while their loved ones receive care at local hospitals. Proceeds go toward keeping the cost of overnight stays reasonable for guests.

This year’s event is happening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Forsyth Barn at Legacy Stables and Events (4151 Thomasville Rd). Here’s how to get involved:
  • Purchase tickets to attend — individual tickets are $100, Wooden Spoon sponsorships cost $500, and a reserved table for 10 guests costs $1,250
  • Find a chef team and “tip” them (aka make a donation)
  • Make an online donation
If you attend, bring your appetite. You’ll be able to try what the teams whip up + vote for the “People’s Choice” and “Crowd Pleaser” award winners.
