Ever wondered what it’d be like to own your own castle that resembles the Graylyn Estate? Meet the Buena Vista property on West Kent Road that’s up for sale.

The single-family home was designed for RJ Reynolds executive James Dyer and his wife Diana. The home sits on over 2.5 acres and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Dyer commissioned the New York architectural firm Mayers, Murray, and Phillip to design his new home on May 1, 1925. But due to a heart attack, he never got to live there. The residence was home to his wife and four children after it was completed in late 1931.

The historic home features a wood vaulted ceiling and plenty of nooks inviting natural light at different corners of the home. It also comes with a cook’s kitchen which includes an extensive butler’s pantry. Here are other unique features:
  • 5 beds + 5.5 baths
  • Three garages + a greenhouse
  • Private study room with built-in bookshelves
  • Secret outdoor garden with a mini waterfall

Imagine your dream life in the Twin City. Maybe you’re thinking less humidity, a better transit system, and freebies from your favorite local spots — but it can’t be that easy, right? We make the hypothetical rules here, and we asked our readers to share which of these two options:
  1. Free parking downtown
  2. More sidewalks
  3. $500 rent forever
  4. Unlimited funds to shop local
  5. Better traffic flow on I-40
The top two answers were: free parking downtown (62%) and $500 rent forever (47%). We took to Instagram to ask our followers too and the biggest winner came to free parking downtown.

It sounds like parking is the biggest concern — and we hear you. The city is planning to bring in a company that would implement new equipment like updated meters and gate arms. This project is part of the 10-year Downtown Plan to accommodate residents and visitors as the city continues to grow.

From the editor
If I could pick two things to help the Twin City become a better place to live, I’d definitely choose more sidewalks and unlimited funds to shop local. I’m curious to hear your take.
