Since North Carolina became a state in 1789, it’s cranked out some pretty noteworthy items. Some, like the Shibumi Beach Shade + The Nugget, are newer innovations, but others like Krispy Kreme are so iconic they enjoy national acclaim.
Let’s explore Winston-Salem’s most famous products, shall we?
Dewey’s Bakery
Cue the smell of those delicious pastries. The 95-year-old bakery first opened in the foothills of NC and was founded by immigrants from the European kingdom of Moravia. The thin Moravian cookies are a delicacy and can be enjoyed with a cup of coffee or tea. Be warned, they are so good you may fly through them in one sitting.

Krispy Kreme
Folks have been chowing down on Krispy Kreme’s fluffy, yeast-based doughnuts since Vernon Rudolph concocted them for his small, Old Salem-based coffee shop in 1937.

Answered: WStoday readers pick two options to create their Winston-Salem dream life
Don’t be afraid to dream big. | Photo by WStoday
Last week we asked you to imagine your dream life in the Twin City. Although we don’t have a magic wand, that doesn’t stop us from dreaming. Here are the five hypothetical options readers were asked to choose from:
Free parking downtown
More sidewalks
$500 rent forever
Unlimited funds to shop local
Better traffic flow on I-40
The top two answers were: free parking downtown (62%) and $500 rent forever (47%). We took to Instagram to ask our followers too and the biggest winner came to free parking downtown.
It sounds like parking is the biggest concern — and we hear you. The city is planning to bring in a company that would implement new equipment like updated meters and gate arms. This project is part of the 10-year Downtown Plan to accommodate residents and visitors as the city continues to grow.
The first thing I learned about Winston-Salem before moving here over two years ago was that is was home to Krispy Kreme. My journalism professor so kindly gave me a Krispy Kreme gift card and I ended up sharing the sweet treats with my new friends I’ve made here. I’ll always cherish those memories.
