Thanks to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, we know what temperatures and precipitation trends to expect in our city for December, January, and February. While exact weather conditions typically can’t be predicted more than a week in advance, here’s a seasonal outlook to help you prepare for what winter will bring.

Reminder: The first day of winter is Saturday, Dec. 21.

    December

Winston-Salem’s average temperature in December ranges between 33°F and 51°F. Winstonians can expect temperatures to be slightly warmer than usual.

    January

Historically, lows in January are 30°F on average, with highs of 49°F. January tends to be Winston-Salem’s coldest month. It’s possible Winstonians may see some snowfall, but don’t get your hopes up, snow lovers — experts predict less snow than usual this season. Bonus: here are the NOAA’s winter safety tips.
