Your third place

We’ve all heard the sayings “third time is a charm,” “third strike and you’re out,” but what about third place?

Sociologist Ray Oldenburg explains this phenomenon in his book, “The Great Good Place.” It’s that sports bar you love watching football at every week, that coffee shop where all the baristas know your name, or perhaps, that one park you love to go to — away from the bustling city. Whatever it is, we want to know, but we’ll go first in a second (no pun intended). These places are important for many reasons, but particularly for promoting social vitality + a sense of community.

Kellina’s pick:

City Editor Kellina loves The Remedy in the West End. The cozy spot is the place she’s likely to run into someone she knows. She also loves serving meals with her church community group at the Bethesda Center at least once a month.

$270,000. That’s how much 25 minority-owned small businesses received to support their growth and development this year, thanks to Greater Winston-Salem Inc.'s Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) Grant program.

Now in its fifth and final year, the MBE grant program is on track to complete its goal to promote sustained economic recovery and job retention for Black and Latinx-owned small businesses in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County — with a total investment of $1.2 million.

This year’s recipients include 19 Black-owned businesses and six Latino-owned businesses. Funds can be used for special projects or general operating expenses like salaries, wages, lease or rent payments, and more.

Grant recipients range from restaurants and coffee shops to childcare centers, wellness resources, and beauty products. See the full list of businesses and look out for exciting changes coming this year.
