After years of delayed deadlines, it’s finally getting real — the official deadline to obtain a REAL ID is coming up on May 7, 2025.

Why do I need one?

You’ll need a REAL ID if you plan to fly domestically or enter secure federal or military facilities starting May 7. Take this 30-second quiz to find out if you need a REAL ID.

How can I get one?

To apply for a REAL ID, you must go in-person to an NC Division of Motor Vehicles driver license office (there are two WS locations + others in Kernersville, Greensboro, and High Point).

Make sure to bring the following (originals, not copies):
  • Proof of identity and date of birth (Ex: birth certificate or passport)
  • Two proofs of NC residency (Ex: utility bill + NC voter precinct card)
  • Proof of your full Social Security Number (including your full name)
  • If you’re getting a driver’s license, one document proving liability insurance coverage from a provider licensed to do business in NC
  • If applicable, proof of name change + proof of legal presence/lawful status for non-US citizens
