How to get your REAL ID in Winston-Salem

After years of delayed deadlines, it’s finally getting real — the official deadline to obtain a REAL ID is coming up on May 7, 2025.

Why do I need one?

You’ll need a REAL ID (or a different federally approved identification, such as a passport) if you plan to fly domestically or enter secure federal or military facilities starting May 7. If you don’t have one by that time, you’ll still be able to vote, drive, apply for benefits, purchase alcohol or cigarettes, and access federal courts with a standard state license.

How can I get one?

To apply for a REAL ID, you must go in-person to an NC Division of Motor Vehicles driver license office (there are two WS locations + others in Kernersville, Greensboro, and High Point).

Pro tip: Make an appointment online before you head out to skip the line.

Make sure to bring the following (originals, not copies):

  • Proof of identity and date of birth (Ex: birth certificate or passport)
  • Two proofs of NC residency (Ex: utility bill + NC voter precinct card)
  • Proof of your full Social Security Number (including your full name)
  • If you’re getting a driver’s license, one document proving liability insurance coverage from a provider licensed to do business in NC
  • If applicable, proof of name change + proof of legal presence/lawful status for non-US citizens
