News Notes

Biz

Reynolds American, Inc. announced that it will expand production at its Reynolds Operations Center in Tobaccoville — primarily to increase the production capacity of smokeless products. The expansion will account for many of the 300 jobs the company plans to add in 2025.

Travel

Mom, Airbnb and VRBO are fighting. The beef between the two popular accommodation platforms is thanks to a sarcastic advertisement from the latter — but we don’t like to get involved. That’s why our guide on places to stay in Winston-Salem features listings from both. (Business Insider)

Ranked

Texas burger giant Whataburger was recently named one of the best Southern food chains by Southern Living. Good news — the sensation is spreading to North Carolina (including here in WS) this year.

Weather

Spring is warming up, and it’s likely to keep getting warmer in Winston-Salem. According to the National Weather Service, NC’s temperatures are likely to be above average over the next three months — so why not use the warmer weather to enjoy some al fresco dining?

Holiday

Reese’s Peanut Butter Eggs or Cadbury Creme Eggs? It seems like North Carolina has chosen Reese’s, based on a nationwide candy study conducted by DoorDash. If you still need to fill your Easter baskets, stock up by hopping over to a local spot like Brasstown Chocolate.

Eat

Cappuccino Chocolate + Cranberry Orange. These are just two of the four types of irresistible mini-loaves at historic Winkler Bakery, made fresh every morning. See the other two tasty flavors.*

Finance

Could you save an extra $1,300 a year? A 2024 survey found that switching car insurance providers could save you that much money annually. What would you do with the extra cash? (We see a “White Lotus"-esque vacation in our future.) See if you could save.*

Number

$100. That’s how much you can save on the HP Smart Tank 7602 printer for a limited time. Plus, you’ll get free shipping + two years of ink. Order it now.*

WStoday: Salem Lake trail scenic view
There’s plenty to do at Salem Lake, including fishing, boating, or taking on this trail with a scenic view. | WStoday team
Earlier this week we shared our guide to local hiking trails, and there’s more where that came from. Check out these hikes that are best for working up a sweat.

Key: Easy = 🥾| Moderate = 🥾🥾 | Hard = 🥾🥾🥾

Hobby Park Trail, 2301 W. Clemmonsville Rd.
  • Difficulty: 🥾🥾
  • Length: 2.8-mile loop
  • Wheelchair accessible: No
  • Pet-friendly: Yes, with leash
This moderately-challenging course is perfect for a quick outdoor hike to get your blood pumping, with several bumps and rocks along the way. The trail is also popular with mountain bikers, so stay on the lookout.

Pilot Mountain State Park, 1721 Pilot Knob Park Rd., Pinnacle
  • Difficulty: Varies
  • Length: Varies
  • Wheelchair accessible: No
  • Pet-friendly: Yes, with leash
This Surry County gem (~30 minutes outside of downtown Winston-Salem) has multiple trails you can choose from, all ranging in difficulty level. For a good workout, we recommend the Grindstone Trail — a 3.5-mile strenuous hike that climbs uphill.

The Buy

A pair of 5” lined track shorts from lululemon. Designed for running, the shorts have a built-in liner for extra coverage and wick away sweat fast. Psst — these Soothfeel athletic shorts are a great workout option, too.

The Wrap

Brianna Williams Wrap
I’m already thinking about restaurants across the region that I think could earn a spot in the new MICHELIN Guide American South. Are there any local restaurants you think might — or should — make the cut? Let us know.
