Hold on tightly because this new development is taking off the ground. Winston-Salem’s new mixed-use development has entered a pivotal phase. In December 2024, The Grounds announced plans to create a vibrant district around Deacon Boulevard and Baity Street.

Winston-Salem based real estate investment + development firm Front Street Capital joined by Atlanta-based firm Carter laid down the groundwork of what residents and visitors can expect.

“As we build The Grounds, we’re not just constructing buildings; we’re creating an integrated, walkable environment where nature, people, and development thrive together,” said Coleman Team, President and Managing Partner at Front Street Capital. “This work sets the stage for a new level of sustainability, accessibility, and community engagement, in this immediate area and beyond.”

Key improvements include:

  • Revitalization of the site with over 200 native trees and plants to enhance healthy vegetation
  • One-mile trail loop with benches, seat walls, and open grassy areas
  • Bike-friendly paths to support healthier modes of transportation within the district
  • Safer pedestrian crossings across University Parkway and easy pedestrian access between Wake Forest’s Reynolda Campus and The Grounds area

Plans to improve the area’s ecosystem and habitat for wildlife are central to The Grounds project. The group aims to prioritize walkability without compromising event traffic flow.

Due to construction around the area, Deacon Boulevard will be closed between University Parkway and Piccolo Drive through August. Drivers and visitors are encouraged to use Reynolds Boulevard, Shorefair Drive, and 27th Street to reach Wake Forest baseball, tennis, and football facilities + other businesses in the area.

The work is expected to be completed in summer 2026, and the retail and dining village will open in fall 2026.
