Fresh haircut, backpack in hand, your first day of school outfit ready to conquer the new school year. Although those days may be long gone for some, the thrill of learning never gets old. That’s why we’re giving you the scoop on personal enrichment courses in the Twin City that’ll spark your creativity and keep your mind sharp. No lockers. No bells. Just learning on your terms.
The community art and craft school has been offering classes to students of all ages since 1945. Studios are located downtown and at the Generations Center. Browse class offerings, which range from textiles to photography.
A membership will allow you to use the space and take advantage of on-demand training. Use your hands + mind to create in a variety of workshops and classes like 3D printing or sewing.
Pull up a chair at Study Hall and engage in thoughtful conversations with other lifelong learners. Writer and professor Jen Howard will lead the four-part course series in discussing how cultural values and fictional characters reframe the human experience.

Grandpa Joe’s Slaberia opens today at Salem Bottleworks. The new joint is the second eatery to open on the multi-use space, next to Bobby Boy Bakeshop, which will soon turn into a food hall + entertainment space. Editor Kellina recommends the Mortadella with banana soft-serve ice cream topped with coconut chips.

Winston-Salem’s food scene is brewing. You can now order your lattes, coffee, and fizzy dirty sodas at Campus Gas. The locally owned, women-led coffee shop, The Blend, will also serve fresh pastries and mocktails at the bar located on Polo Road, starting Monday, Aug. 25.
Sports
Team Winston-Salem cyclist Owen Cole is heading to France for the Tour de l’Avenir with USA Cycling. Cole will cycle through the mountains with other top international riders from Saturday, Aug. 23, through Friday, Aug. 29. Get in on the action with these unique sports activities in the Twin City.
Watch
A movie filmed and directed in Winston-Salem will be out in theaters. Winston-Salem native Angus MacLachlan wrote and directed “A Little Prayer,” a film about a father who grapples to protect his daughter. Grab your ticket and head to a/perture Cinema to watch the screening on Thursday, Aug. 28, followed by a Q+A with the film writer and directors.
