Older adults on the move: Ways for adults 50+ to get active this summer

Check out these wellness activities for older adults.

Scientific research suggests that people who exercise regularly live longer and happier lives, and Winston-Salem has plenty of ways for older adults to stay active. We’ve highlighted activities — indoors and outdoors — that adults 50+ can participate in through the City of Winston-Salem Recreation and Parks Department.

Bocce, Miller Park, 400 Leisure Ln. | Tuesdays + Fridays, 10 a.m. | Stop by the park for a classic game that requires strategy and skill.

Table Tennis, Miller Park Recreation Center, 400 Leisure Ln. | Mondays, Wednesdays + Fridays, 9 a.m. | Not up for the competitive play? Join on Wednesdays at 2 p.m. for more casual games. Pro tip: Bring your own paddle to all games.

Chair Exercise, Carl H. Russell Community Center, 3531 Carver School Rd. | Mondays + Wednesdays, 10-11 a.m., Fridays, 12-1 p.m. | Bring a water bottle to this recreation and parks class for seniors.

Petanque, Miller Park petanque courts, 400 Leisure Ln. | Sundays, 1-4 p.m. | This outdoor game similar to Bocce requires no experience or equipment.

Adult Water Fitness Class, Bolton Park Pool, 1590 Bolton St. SW | Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, 11 a.m. | For access to the class, pay the pool entry fee + a $3 class fee — or, you can get a 10-class punch card for $20.

Adult Body Fit, Sprague Community Center, 1350 E. Sprague St. | Tuesdays, 6 p.m. | Take part in this full fitness class that’s open to all adults.

Senior Basketball, Miller Park Community Center, 400 Leisure Ln. | Wednesdays, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. | Adults ages 50+ can join this weekly basketball game.
