News Notes

Opening

Get a taste of Jamaica during The Dutch Pot Grand Opening today, May 23. Chef Rohan from Kingston, Jamaica, will bring in the flair from his hometown by serving dishes like oxtails, jerk, and curry chicken. The party will go on from 12 to 6 p.m., but the restaurant will stay open until 2:30 a.m.

Eat

Chicken strips are back at McDonald’s. The McCrispy Strips recently became the restaurant’s first permanent addition in four years. Prices can vary by location, but you can usually get a combo meal for about $10. If this isn’t your flavor, explore other local restaurants with meals under $10.

Number

$3.08. That’s the projected national average price for a gallon of gasoline heading into Memorial Day weekend — 50 cents lower than last year’s average. If you’re taking a trip out of Winston-Salem this weekend, you’ll likely pay less because gas in North Carolina is below the national average. (GasBuddy)

Travel

Airbnb just launched a new in-app feature that allows you to book services and activities. Imagine a sushi chef in a shipping container apartment. But if you’re just looking for a cool place to stay, browse some of our favorite Airbnbs.

Arts

We have “American Gothic” at home. That’s something more people may be saying after Samsung acquired the rights to ~50 works from the Art Institute of Chicago, now available for download on Samsung Smart TVs — it also has pieces from the MOMA + the Met. But can they compete with our local art museums?

Eat

This summer sandwich alternative is perfect for the beach, the pool, or the park: recipe this way.*

Closing

This is the final weekend to experience the exhibition The Washington Post celebrated as “small, yet riveting”Andrew Wyeth at Kuerner Farm: The Eye of the Earth. If you haven’t seen these iconic American paintings yet, consider adding Reynolda to your weekend plans.*

Shop

Summer is almost here — and Hoka shoes deliver all-day comfort and support for any activity. Brad’s Deals has rounded up the best summer Hoka discounts from top retailers.*

The Wrap

From our Editor: Kellina

I hope you all have a safe Memorial Day weekend. As for me, I’ll be soaking up some sun at the beach. If you’re looking for an activity to do, I’d recommend a peaceful getaway at The RiverPark at Cooleemee River Park (just ~45 minutes from downtown Winston-Salem), perfect to soak up the sun in nature with shaded areas. The entrance fee is $5 per car.
