Jim Shaw Academy is taking off in Winston-Salem after a long pause. Editor Kellina spoke to Alexandria Shaw, who returned to the Twin City to uphold this mission of the academy after the passing of her grandfather and father, Jim Shaw Sr., and Shaw Jr.. — Alexandria Shaw described her grandfather as a selfless leader who aimed to revitalize the East Winston business community.

“He inspired me to be a leader, not only for my family, but also for the community as well,” Alexandria Shaw said. " I always wanted to be like him.”

The name Shaw was a pillar in the community, as Alexandria watched her grandfather’s active involvement in the community while she was visiting during the holidays.

“One of the main things he aspired to do was make Liberty Street an opportunity zone,” she said.

Jim Shaw Academy was founded by Jim Shaw Sr. and his wife, Clementine Shaw, to provide access and STEM opportunities for families in East Winston. The academy serves as a doorway to high-demand jobs like pilots, engineers, firefighters, and astronauts. Alexandria said the goal is for students to be the best at it.

In 2025, Jim Shaw Academy saw a record enrollment at its Flight Fest festival, bringing nearly 900 people from across NC and beyond.

“It was a really big way to say that people really want this access,” Alexandria Shaw said.

The organization provides student scholarships for aviation, aerospace, and STEM education. How can you get involved?

  • Locals can sign up to be camp counselors or volunteer during their monthly STEM club, or events like the annual golf tournament.
  • Work in STEM? Reach out to Shaw Academy to share your experience with campers.

Registrations are open for the 2026 ACE Academy, which runs from Monday, June 22 to Friday, July 10. The camp is open to middle and high school students.
