Did you know that Winston-Salem has a special transit option specifically designed for those who aren’t able to use WSTA’s fixed-route services?

Consider this the start of a new public transit series we’re starting that will dive into complicated or underrated aspects of our local transit system. Have a topic you’d like us to consider? Let us know.

What is Trans-AID?

Trans-AID is the Winston-Salem Transit Authority’s ride-share program that provides rides to and from specific destinations. It’s similar to an Uber or Lyft, but in a larger vehicle with other passengers — and less costly.

A one-way trip costs $1, but 10- and 30-ride Trans-AID passes are also available for $10 or $30, respectively.

Who is eligible?

Trans-AID serves three different categories of client:

  • ADA passengers | Those who cannot use fixed routes independently due to disability
  • Medicaid transportation | Those who apply for Trans-AID medical trips through Medicaid
  • Older adults | Locals ages 60+ are automatically eligible

ADA passengers can find and print out applications online, then schedule an interview by phone (336-727-2000).

How + when can I use the service?

  • ADA passengers | Once approved, ADA passengers can schedule services Monday-Sunday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Medicaid transportation | Once approved, Medicaid passengers can schedule services Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., for medical transportation only.
  • Older adults | Older adults can schedule services Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., based on availability.

All clients can schedule weekday services by calling 336-727-2000. Trips can be scheduled up to a week in advance.

Pro tip: As availability allows, recurring trips can be requested for the same time on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

The day of your trip

WSTA requests that passengers are ready 15 minutes before scheduled pick-up time. Upon arrival, Trans-AID can only wait for five minutes within your scheduled pick-up window. If you’re running late, call 336-727-2000 to let them know. Have a great trip.
