December is full of celebrations. Whether it’s for Hanukkah, Yule, Christmas, Kwanzaa, or New Year’s Eve, there’s a good chance you’re celebrating this month.

Before you ditch the decor, we’ve got to ask — do you know the dos and don’ts of recycling in Winston-Salem? Here’s a refresher.

Do recycle

After a quick clean, these materials are ready for recycling:

  • Aluminum cans
  • Flattened cardboard boxes
  • Glass bottles and jars (without lids on)
  • Newspapers, magazines, and catalogs, and office papers
  • Washed and empty plastic bottles
  • Bottles without any residue

Don’t recycle

Here’s what can’t go in your recycling bins:

  • Toys + electronics
  • To-go containers, plastic bags/ wraps, and shredded paper
  • Metallic or glittery materials like trimmings, wrapping paper, ribbons, and bows
  • Bubble wrap and plastic film
  • Styrofoam
  • Electronics and holiday lights

Special recycling

Live Christmas trees can be set out on the curb once decorations are removed. We’ll keep you posted on recycling schedules.

If you’d rather dispose of your Christmas tree yourself, you may do so at these yard waste facilities:

  • Overdale Yard Waste Facility, 4010 Old Milwaukee Ln., Winston-Salem
  • Forum 52 Yard Waste Facility, 180 Northstar Dr., Rural Hall
