Museums are the cultural hubs of our city. In honor of National Travel & Tourism Week, why not act like a tourist in your own city? Whether you’re looking to learn something new about Winston-Salem or plotting a way to spend your Saturday afternoon, here are 14 museums to visit.
History
Shotgun House Legacy Site, 716 Humphrey St. | Donations accepted
Located in Winston-Salem’s first-planned Black community, Happy Hill, the living museum recreates settings from history + exhibits that tell the stories of African American families during historical moments like the Civil Rights Movement. Take a peek inside.
The Shotgun House is set to open full-time beginning fall 2025.
MUSE Winston-Salem, 226 S. Liberty St. | Free
The museum is dedicated to preserving the history of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. It has artifacts and archives dedicated to the area’s struggles and triumphs, and frequently hosts pop-up exhibits and other events around the city to collect perspectives and keep the conversations going.
Support small businesses and artisans across the country when you shop Amazon Handmade. The marketplace features thousands of unique products and gifts, like this etched rolling pin that can transform your homemade baked goods into genuine works of art.
Speaking of museums, I’d like to petition the Museum of Illusion to open in the Twin City. I got to visit one in Chicago as businesses were starting to open back up during the pandemic (hence the mask on my face). What other museums would you like to see in our city? Drop me a line and let me know!
