Weather safety tips ahead of Hurricane Idalia

Possible rainfall and high winds may affect Winston-Salem residents as Hurricane Idalia continues to form over the East Coast today, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The area is in the yellow zone for flash flooding through Thursday morning, meaning there’s a slight risk you could encounter high waters.

Whenever severe weather strikes, the American Red Cross recommends:

  • If at home, stay away from glass windows and doors.
  • Avoid using water during a storm + distance yourself from electrical equipment.
  • Stay away from isolated tall trees, towers, or utility poles in case of a lightning surge.
  • Avoid using candles in case of a power outage; instead use battery-powered lights and flashlights.
  • Consider postponing outdoor activities.
  • Report power outages to your electricity provider.
